Season 1, Episode 3 – Destiny

This episode takes us back 16 years into the past, to examine the origins of Mae and Osha. It also examines the origins of the show’s overall mystery, while leaving even more questions.

Throughout Star Wars lore, other force religions are discussed. It appears, that Osha and Mae are the product of one of these sects, though this sect appears to require monitoring by the Jedi Order. They call themselves witches, though it is unclear what particular religion they are a part of. They have rudimentary force skills, and an alternate understanding of the force. Roughly 300 years prior to the telling of this story, there was a religious entity known as The Path of the Open Hand who thought the Force should be free.  They abhorred anyone who “used the force”. Like the witches in this episode, they refer to the force as a thread, which pulled on, alters destinies. It could be that these witches are an evolution of the Path…

Early on, it seems that Mae has dark side predilections. She is cruel to animals. She is quick to anger. She only wants her way. Yet her sister questions everything and yearns to find her own path. She is not interested in ascending to be a witch.  She is also drawn the Jedi….and appears to be drawn to the light. Could it be that Mae and Osha are a force dyad?

The first time most of us were aware of the force dyad concept occurred during the final installment of the last Skywalker Trilogy. A force dyad is a connection between two individuals that is so strong, the duo is considered one with the force. It is clear that Osha and Mae can touch and communicate with each other through the force. Their mother refers to the connection between Mae and Osha as a thread. It is likely that they are indeed a force dyad. Given the state of Star Wars lore, they are also likely to meet an untimely demise.

The other interesting thing revealed in this episode is how the sisters were created. It seems that Osha and Mae are not the products of natural reproduction, but instead, some sort of force witches’ magic. Upon further reflection, it occurs to many of us that perhaps this process is also how Anakin was made. Darth Sidious’s involvement in Anakin’s creation is discussed in the last comic installment of “Darth Vader Lord of the Sith”, where Lord Vader observes this possibility in the World Between Worlds. While this occurrence was viewed thru the World Between Worlds, it remains to be seen if Darth Sidious really did have a hand in Anakin’s creation; if so, perhaps he learned it from these witches.

This episode also touches on the moral authority of the Jedi. Should they be allowed to take force sensitive children for training whenever they want? Apparently the witches in this coven thought not.

The mystery of this story is deepened when we see all the witches seemingly dead. What killed them? Was the anticipated Sith Lord watching and waiting to pounce? Was he aware of the dyad all along?  Is the Sith Lord one of the witches?
