Obi Wan Kenobi Part VI Review

Obi Wan Kenobi Part VI Review

The culminating episode is full of action and emotion. Questions are answered. More questions remain. Ultimately it is the perfect capstone to a great limited series about Obi Wan Kenobi. We see him come full circle from a Jedi Master who shut the force off to one who fully embraces the force. It will be exciting to see more stories about Kenobi in the future.

Vader’s Mastery: Darth Vader is not hindered in any way by his metal arms and legs. He is quick, powerful and cunning. He has become a master at the lightsaber. Additionally, he has mastered using the force while in a lightsaber battle. He threw boulders and stopped saber strikes among other things, using only the force. However, one wonders why his arms, legs and helmet are not beskar….

Vader’s Remorse: Darth Vader was conflicted about Kenobi’s supposed demise. Good still resides in him, though it is buried. He was clearly pondering what had happened during the initial battle as he walked away from the fight. Further, his obsession with finding Obi Wan after the battle was a clear signal to Darth Sidious that Vader still held affection for Kenobi.

Kenobi’s Mastery: Obi Wan held the massive weight of the rocks and boulders at bay, surviving Vader’s onslaught. This reminded me of an episode in the Clone Wars where both Obi Wan and Anakin were almost crushed by boulders, and they survived by holding them up with the force. The force flowed strongly thru Kenobi as he hammered away with this lightsaber. Vader and Kenobi are almost equals, but Kenobi had the better of him.

Kenobi’s Mercy: Obi Wan looks into the eyes of Anakin for the first time in 10 years. It is a compelling scene, as Vader struggles to breath; struggles to live. Obi Wan even calls him Anakin. Vader’s response is heart wrenching. “Anakin is gone. I am what remains”. Kenobi still loves Anakin. Kenobi apologizes. And the interesting thing is, Anakin is still in there somewhere. Vader absolved Kenobi of killing Anakin. “I am not your failure”. Who said that? Was it Anakin or Vader? Is it Anakin in Vader’s subconscious trying to reach out to his best friend and tell him it’s not his fault? I would like to think so. Unfortunately, in that moment, Vader is in control. Obi Wan walked away. He could not bring himself to kill his old friend. I think he sensed Anakin was still in there and held out hope that Anakin would return to the light. His mercy was eventually rewarded…

Mistakes of the Sith: Isn’t it interesting that Reva did not ensure that the Grand Inquisitor had died? Vader did not ensure that Reva died. Finally, Vader failed to ensure that he finished off Kenobi. It seems in a Sith’s anger, they are unable to detect whether or not a life has expired or not. This failing brought Vader to the brink of death. Only Kenobi’s mercy saved Vader from certain death.

An Inquisitor Turned: Reva released herself from her anger. She could not bring herself to slaughter a child as she had watched her fellow younglings killed. She brought Luke back to the farm and turned away from the Darkside. She is free from her anger and hate. She is free to be who she was meant to be and not an agent of evil, twisted by the Darkside.
Seeds of the Rebellion: Obi Wan Kenobi led Vader away from the escaping refugees. Before he left, Kenobi admonished Roken to lead. Kenobi understood and recognized people wanted change. In order to get there, the Rebellion would need good leaders. The seeds have also been planted with young Leia. First, her adopted parents are not supportive of the Empire. Second, Leia is gifted Tala’s holster, noting she won’t always bee ten years old. Upon her return home, she promptly wears it as part of her outfit. She is already a natural rogue.
Leia’s Attributes. There was a touching moment between Obi Wan Kenobi and Leia. He subtly revealed his knowledge of her parents, gifting her with the knowledge of where her attributes come from. “You are wise, discerning, kindhearted, these are qualities that came from your mother. But you are also passionate, and fearless, forthright and these are gifts from your father. Both were exceptional people who bore an exceptional daughter.” This was a significant emotional moment for all Star Wars fans as we reflect on the stories of Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala.

Answered Questions. We now fully understand the quotes: “A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.” We also understand the genesis of the deep scar in Vader’s forehead.

Unanswered Questions. What becomes of Reva? She has seemingly renounced the Darkside of the Force. How will she spend her days? She knows who Luke Skywalker really is? How does that knowledge remain secret?

Owen’s Moment: It was a deeply emotional moment when Owen asked Kenobi if he would like to meet Luke. He had been watching his best friend’s son for 10 years and had never met him. It brought me to tears.

The Master Revealed. Finally, Qui Gon Jinn reveals himself to Kenobi. Kenobi is relearning how to fully surrender to the force. Perhaps this is why he chose not to finish Vader off. Qui Gon will undoubtedly spend the next seven years teaching Obi Wan Kenobi about the living force. It would be interesting to hear Qui Gon’s assessment of Darth Vader given that Anakin was considered the “Chosen One.”
