Season 1, Episode 5: Practice Makes Perfect

“I want you to be prepared for anything”

“Remain Calm”

“Think”

“Feel the intention of the trooper who will fire first, you should be able to sense the moment before they even pull the trigger”

“The best way I can protect you is to teach you to protect yourself.”

These are General Anakin Skywalker’s quotes to his padawan. The episode opens with Masters’ Yoda, Windu and Kenobi observing Master Tera Sinube proctoring Ahsoka in lightsaber training versus remotes. Interestingly, Master Billaba and her padawan Caleb Dume were also observing. Skywalker shows up late. After the training was over, Skywalker was openly critical of the training. He found it to be useless and challenged Ahsoka to something more realistic without explaining further.
General Skywalker knew better than anyone that realistic training is what will win the day. He knew that battle droids were not the only potential enemy to fear. Jedi must be prepared for any type of enemy and could not be lulled to sleep going against the seemingly mindless droids. Like any good coach, he understands that repetition matters. If you fall off the horse, get back on. In this case, he wanted her to train versus the unpredictable, highly trained clones. Every time she was stunned, he made her get back up and do it again. The first training session was brutal. However, Skywalker’s words resonated with her, and she continued the training as the war continued. The training ended up saving her life as the war ended. Skywalker’s care, compassion and love for Ahsoka helped her survive, even when he turned to the dark side.
Of note, do you think she recognized Kanan Jarrus as Caleb Dume when she finally met him during her role as Fulcrum?
